A strange bubbly blue combination of four different spirits and citrus soda that tastes better than you'd think... adios motherfucker.
Sometimes called a Blue Motorcycle, a Blue Motherfucker, or a Walk Me Down, the Adios Motherfucker was likely named to imply that the people drinking it would be saying goodbye to their friends for the night.
It has the "hey what are the drinking" appeal typical of 80's nightclub cocktails where taste took a backseat to looks.
But despite not fitting in with today's craft cocktail scene, the drink has stuck around, so, here's how to make it.
The AMF drink ingredients
What's in the Adios Motherfucker? Vodka, gin, white rum, blanco tequila, sour mix, and blue curacao are all topped off with lemon-lime soda to make one potent cocktail.
With all the ingredients being masked in citrusy flavor there's no need to reach for your top shelf liquor here.
what does an AMF taste like?
The seemingly strange combination of ingredients is better than you might expect. It tastes like sweet lemon and lime with hints of gin and tequila just noticeable behind the bubbly soda.
Essentially a blue Long Island Iced Tea, the AMF is no brilliant feat of mixology but its straightforward citrus flavor has a place in the cocktail world.
What is blue curacao?
It is an orange flavored liquor made using peels from Laraha oranges and blue food coloring for its distinct vibrant blue color. That signature bright blue makes it a star in other blue drinks like the Aqua Velva, and the Blue Hawaiian.
If you need a substitute for the blue curacao you can use triple sec or dry curacao. The drink will miss the signature blue AMF color, but it will still taste the same.
My favorite brand of blue curacao is Giffard, but you can also look for Drillaud or any other brand you like.
Make your own quick sour mix
The standard recipe for the AMF calls for sour mix, but I'm here to tell you you can make it even better and skip the bottle of sour mix!
Any cocktail recipe with sour mix can be instantly be upgraded by swapping it out for a half and half mix of simple syrup and fresh lemon/lime juice.
Quickly make a simple syrup by adding equal parts sugar and water to a small saucepan and warm until the sugar dissolves. Then once cooled simply substitute half simple syrup, and half 50:50 lemon/lime juice.
EX: 2 oz sour mix can be switched out for 1 oz lemon/lime juice and 1 oz simple syrup.
How to make the AMF cocktail:
Add the gin, vodka, tequila, rum, blue curacao, and sour mix (simple syrup and lemon/lime juice blend) to your cocktail shaker.
Shake hard until chilled before straining into a hurricane or highball glass filled with ice. Top it up with lemon-lime soda, garnish with a lemon wedge or wheel, and drop in a straw. You could also add a maraschino cherry on top if you're feeling sassy.
amf vs. long island iced tea
The only differences between making a Long Island Iced Tea and an AMF are swapping out the cola for lemon-lime soda and the triple sec for blue curacao.
how strong is the Adios Motherfucker?
The blend of four different liquors gives the impression that this is some high octane concoction. However, the 2 ounces of base spirits is fairly standard making it no stronger than some classic cocktails like the Manhattan.
The recipe could certainly be brought to nuclear levels of booze by increasing the measurements of the base spirits... but watch yourself.
