The Insomniac cocktail, a creamy coffee dessert drink

Bottle of Kahlua liqueur for the insomniac

The Insomniac cocktail is rich and creamy with perfectly complimenting flavors.

I learned the Insomniac while watching the coffee video from the Bonneville Cocktail Collection YouTube channel. They have put together an awesome series of categorized cocktail videos that are really worth giving a look!

It has a combination of flavors that is pretty difficult not to like. Espresso, hazelnut, cream and more coffee?

...yes please.

The Insomniac cocktail definitely lives more in the world of dessert cocktails with sweetness coming from both the liqueurs, but sometimes it’s nice to have a sweet drink. A bit of bitterness from the espresso and the thick cream cut through enough that it does have a little bit of balance.

Building the Insomniac

I realize that not everybody will have espresso available to them at home, so if that is the case for you there are a few other options you can go with.

Espresso can work really well in drinks, but if you don't have espresso you could use cold brew or just strongly brewed coffee.

Yes, the flavor and texture of the final drink will be better when you use the shot of espresso, but do not skip making this recipe just because of that. Use what is available to you!

The other ingredients are fairly straight forward and typically not too hard to find.

For vodka, buy a decent bottle and avoid anything that is priced ridiculously cheap, or that you recognize from college parties. It is the one spirit that is intentionally distilled to the point that flavor is taken off the table so as long as it is respectable quality you are in good shape.

And that leaves us with the liqueurs… There are a few hazelnut options out there, but Frangelico is probably the most well known. It is sweet with flavors of toasted nuts, honey, vanilla and cinnamon.

Kahlua is pretty much the standard in terms of coffee liqueurs, however, there are lots more options than in the world of hazelnut liqueurs. Many craft distilleries make their own offerings and they are all a little different. The same as I say with everything, try as many as you can and decide for yourself what you want to go with.

When you are in the mood for a sweet drink with simple and straight forward flavors, look to mix this baby up.

  • Add all the ingredients to your shaker.
  • Add ice and shake vigorously for about 12 seconds.

Notes

If you wanted to make this an even more decadent drink you could use heavy cream instead of the half and half.
