Wray and Ting, the Classic Overproof Jamaican Rum Cocktail

This delicious grapefruit and white rum highball has made it's way to the United States, and let's just say... we owe you Jamaica.

Reasons why Wray & Ting is awesome:

  • Extremely easy to make
  • Refreshing as f*@k
  • Tons of flavor with only two ingredients

If you are going to be anywhere hot and need a refreshing cocktail, this needs to be at the top of your list.

Opening a bottle of Ting soda

What is Ting?

It is a specific brand of Jamaican grapefruit soda that has gained quite a reputation as a mixer for rum.

So naturally you need to know... What does Ting soda taste like?

Compared to other grapefruit sodas Ting has more bitterness.
It's still plenty sweet, but it has the taste you get from citrus peel that helps it pair well with rum.

It's also cool to see that there are little specs of grapefruit pulp floating around in the bottle so you know there is actually some real fruit in there.

Pouring Overproof white rum into the glass

Wray and Nephew overproof white rum

When it comes to overproof rums Wray and Nephew is one of the standards.

It clocks in at a strong 126 proof, but with all that alcohol comes tons of flavor. It's a blend of sugarcane molasses distillations from both pot and column stills, and if you don't know much about rum that translates to: It tastes like bananas foster and fiery flavorful goodness.

Measuring Wray and Nephew Overproof Rum

Rum Spotlight

Wray & Nephew has been distilled in Jamaica since 1825, and has become one of the most appreciated white rums.

It tastes like overripe bananas, vanilla, and tropical fruits.

If you ever hear the term "funky" to describe rum, this is one of the rums that refers to.

Not funky like rotten, or strong cheese, but funky as in ultra-ripe tropical fruits mixed with sweet vanilla and vegetal notes all coming together in a bold delicious flavor.

Many large liquor stores will carry Wray & Nephew, but if they don't, the best substitute is Rum Fire from Hampden Estate which is also a Jamaican white overproof rum.

Pouring Tin into a collins glass

Where to find Ting soda

Both of the ingredients for this cocktail can be a little tricky to find, but there certainly are some substitutions that can be made. Ting can really be a sneaky devil especially if you are trying to find the nice glass bottles.

Make sure you look in the right place.

In large grocery stores you can start by looking in the soda isle (obviously... thanks), but if you can't find it there check if the store has a Hispanic food section. That's where I have had the best of luck. Plus, you can sometimes find the ever coveted Mexican Coca Cola right next to the Ting.

Topping the glass with Ting Soda

Another place to check is any sort of Hispanic grocery or corner store, but if you really can't find Ting (or don't want to look to begin with) you can order some on Amazon HERE  (affiliate).

Should you absolutely not be able to get your hands on Ting, you can substitute it with Jarritos grapefruit or Squirt. However, you will not be able to talk in a Jamaican accent while you drink it.

Gently Stirring the Wray & Ting

Ways to spice up your Ting with a sting

The whole point of a highball cocktail like Wray & Ting is to have something simple and delicious so we will not get to fancy here.

Although, there are a few quick things you could do to mix things up.

  1. Adding a lime wedge to squeeze in
  2. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint
  3. Add a couple dashes of bitters

Just a few ideas that could take things up a notch.
